Get a bowl, line the botton of it with foil, add some salt , sea salt works best. About an 1/8th of a cup. Baking soda can be substituted for the salt. Both are good. Place the jewlery in the bowl. Works for gold, silver, diamonds and vintage jewls. Let it sit a couple of hours. Depending on the piece of jewlery and how dirty it is you can take a toothbrush to it and scrub it gently with the salt or baking soda water. Then take a microfiber jewlery cloth to dry and polish. Any dirt or grit if left will be soaked up by the fiber cloth. Due to the technology and construction of the cloth it will never streak or scratch your jewlery.
